Taurursodiol
Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (also known as TUDCA) is a bile acid that is found naturally in the body. It is a taurine conjugate form of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), which is used as a treatment for gallstones and liver diseases.
Overview[edit | edit source]
Tauroursodeoxycholic acid is a water-soluble bile acid, which is produced in the liver and is a component of bile. It is involved in the emulsification of fats in the digestive system, and also plays a role in the regulation of cholesterol levels in the body.
Medical Uses[edit | edit source]
TUDCA has been used in the treatment of a variety of medical conditions, including cholestasis, a condition in which the flow of bile from the liver is slowed or stopped. It is also used to treat primary biliary cirrhosis, a chronic liver disease, and to dissolve small gallstones.
In addition, TUDCA has been studied for its potential benefits in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Some research suggests that it may help to protect neurons from damage and improve mitochondrial function.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Like all medications, TUDCA can cause side effects. These may include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, it can cause allergic reactions.
