Telecanthus with associated abnormalities

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Telecanthus with Associated Abnormalities is a medical condition characterized by an increased distance between the medial canthi of the eyes, which is often associated with various other abnormalities. This condition can be congenital or acquired and is distinct from hypertelorism, which refers to an increased distance between the bony orbits.

Etiology[edit | edit source]

Telecanthus can result from a variety of causes, including genetic syndromes, trauma, or as a consequence of surgical procedures. In some cases, it is a feature of complex syndromic conditions, such as Waardenburg syndrome, Blepharophimosis syndrome, and others.

Clinical Features[edit | edit source]

The hallmark of telecanthus is an increased interpupillary distance, primarily due to the medial displacement of the inner canthi. This condition may present alongside other ocular abnormalities such as epicanthic folds, strabismus, and ptosis. Non-ocular features may include facial dysmorphisms and, in some syndromes, limb or organ anomalies.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of telecanthus involves a comprehensive eye examination, including measurements of the interpupillary distance and the inner canthal distance. Genetic testing may be indicated if a syndromic cause is suspected.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment of telecanthus is primarily surgical and aims to correct the medial canthal position to achieve a more typical appearance and to address any associated functional impairments. The specific surgical approach depends on the underlying cause and the presence of associated abnormalities.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

The prognosis for individuals with telecanthus varies depending on the underlying cause and the presence of associated abnormalities. Early intervention, especially in cases where vision is affected, can improve outcomes.
