Test specificity
Test Specificity is a statistical measure used in medical testing and diagnostic testing to evaluate the performance of a test. It is defined as the proportion of true negative results among the total number of negative cases in the population. In other words, it measures the ability of a test to correctly identify those without the condition.

Test Specificity is one of the two measures of the validity of a diagnostic test, the other being test sensitivity. It is calculated as the number of true negatives (TN) divided by the sum of the number of true negatives and false positives (FP). The formula is as follows:
- Specificity = TN / (TN + FP)
This means that a test with high specificity is able to correctly identify a high proportion of individuals who do not have the disease.

The importance of test specificity lies in its ability to minimize false positive results. A test with high specificity will have fewer false positive results, meaning that fewer people will be incorrectly diagnosed as having a condition that they do not actually have. This is particularly important in the context of diseases for which the consequences of a false positive result can be severe, such as cancer or HIV.
Factors affecting test specificity[edit | edit source]
Several factors can affect the specificity of a test. These include the prevalence of the disease in the population, the quality of the test, and the threshold used to define a positive result. In general, a lower threshold will increase the sensitivity of the test but decrease its specificity, and vice versa.
Relationship with other test characteristics[edit | edit source]
Test specificity is related to other characteristics of a test, such as its positive predictive value and negative predictive value. These measures take into account the prevalence of the disease in the population and provide a more complete picture of the test's performance.
