Tetracamphilius
Tetracamphilius is a genus of fish in the family Mochokidae. It is native to Africa, specifically the Congo River Basin. The genus contains four recognized species, all of which are characterized by their elongated bodies and nocturnal habits.
Description[edit | edit source]
Species in the genus Tetracamphilius are small to medium-sized fish, typically measuring between 5 and 15 centimeters in length. They have elongated bodies, with a flattened ventral surface and a rounded dorsal surface. The body is covered in bony plates, except for a small area around the mouth and gill openings. The mouth is small and ventral, with a pair of barbels on the upper lip and four on the lower lip.
Distribution and Habitat[edit | edit source]
Tetracamphilius species are endemic to the Congo River Basin in Africa. They inhabit a variety of freshwater habitats, including rivers, streams, and lakes. They are typically found in areas with a sandy or muddy substrate, where they can burrow during the day.
Behavior and Ecology[edit | edit source]
Tetracamphilius are nocturnal, hiding in burrows or under vegetation during the day and emerging at night to feed. They are bottom-dwellers, feeding primarily on small invertebrates and detritus. Little is known about their reproductive habits, but it is believed that they lay eggs in burrows or crevices.
Species[edit | edit source]
The genus Tetracamphilius includes the following species:
- Tetracamphilius angustifrons
- Tetracamphilius clandestinus
- Tetracamphilius notatus
- Tetracamphilius pectinatus
Conservation[edit | edit source]
Due to their limited distribution and specific habitat requirements, Tetracamphilius species may be vulnerable to habitat loss and degradation. However, their conservation status has not been formally assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
