The Netherlands (Dutch: Nederland [ˈneːdərlɑnt]), informally referred to as Holland, is a country primarily located in Western Europe and partly in the Caribbean. It is the largest of four constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The Netherlands is located in Northwestern Europe. The country shares borders with Germany to the east, Belgium to the south, and the North Sea to the northwest.

The Netherlands has a long history. It became an independent country in the 16th century. The Dutch Golden Age (17th century) is characterized by great achievements in trade, art, and science.

Politics[edit | edit source]

The Netherlands is a parliamentary constitutional monarchy with a head of state called the King or Queen. The current monarch is King Willem-Alexander.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The Netherlands has a developed economy. It is known for its high standard of living. The country is one of the world's top ten exporting countries.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Dutch culture is diverse and full of rich traditions. The country is known for its art, particularly painting, its tolerance and liberal policies, and its flat landscape, characterized by canals, tulip fields, windmills and cycling routes.
