The Ohio State University (OSU), commonly referred to as Ohio State, is a large, primarily residential, public university located in Columbus, Ohio. Founded in 1870 as a land-grant university and the ninth university in Ohio with the Morrill Act of 1862, the university was originally known as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College.

The Ohio State University was founded in response to a demand for a higher education institution in the area. It initially focused on various agricultural and mechanical disciplines but quickly expanded its curriculum to include a comprehensive range of subjects. The university officially changed its name to The Ohio State University in 1878.

Campus[edit | edit source]

The main campus in Columbus covers 1,665 acres of land, with iconic landmarks such as the Ohio Stadium and The Oval, a large open space at the heart of the campus. The university also operates regional campuses in Lima, Mansfield, Marion, Newark, and Wooster.

Ohio State is known for its rigorous academics and has numerous highly ranked departments including the College of Engineering, Fisher College of Business, College of Medicine, and Moritz College of Law.
