The World's 50 Best Restaurants

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

The World's 50 Best Restaurants is an annual list that ranks the top restaurants globally. The list is produced by UK media company William Reed Business Media, which began publishing the list in 2002. The ranking is based on a poll of international chefs, restaurateurs, gourmands, and restaurant critics.

History[edit | edit source]

The World's 50 Best Restaurants list was first published in 2002 by William Reed Business Media. The list was initially intended as a one-off publication, but due to its popularity, it has been published annually since then. The list quickly gained prestige and is now considered one of the most influential rankings in the restaurant industry.

Ranking Process[edit | edit source]

The World's 50 Best Restaurants list is compiled using the votes of The World's 50 Best Restaurants Academy, a group of over 1,000 international restaurant industry experts. The Academy is split into 26 separate regions around the world, each of which has 40 members, including a chairperson. Each member can cast seven votes, of which at least three must recognize restaurants outside of their own region.

Criticism[edit | edit source]

The World's 50 Best Restaurants list has faced criticism for its lack of transparency in the voting process and for under-representing certain cuisines and regions. In response to these criticisms, the organization has made changes to its voting process and criteria in recent years.

Notable Winners[edit | edit source]

Several restaurants have gained international recognition after being ranked in The World's 50 Best Restaurants list. These include El Bulli in Spain, The Fat Duck in the UK, Noma in Denmark, and Eleven Madison Park in the USA, all of which have been named the best restaurant in the world in different years.
