Threadfin Bream

The Threadfin Bream (Nemipterus japonicus) is a species of fish belonging to the family Nemipteridae, commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region. They are also known as Japanese threadfin bream or jobfish.

Description[edit | edit source]

Threadfin Bream are characterized by their elongated, compressed bodies and a distinctively long pectoral fin, which gives them their common name. They are typically pinkish in color, with a silver-white underbelly. The species can reach a maximum length of 45 cm, but are commonly found at around 25 cm.

Distribution and Habitat[edit | edit source]

Threadfin Bream are widely distributed in the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region, from the eastern coast of Africa to the western Pacific Ocean. They inhabit sandy or muddy seabeds, usually at depths between 50 and 100 meters.

Diet[edit | edit source]

Threadfin Bream primarily feed on small benthic organisms, including crustaceans, mollusks, and worms. They are also known to consume smaller fish.

Commercial Importance[edit | edit source]

Threadfin Bream are of significant commercial importance in many parts of their range. They are caught both for local consumption and for export, primarily in Southeast Asia. The fish are typically caught using trawling methods.

Conservation Status[edit | edit source]

While Threadfin Bream are not currently listed as threatened or endangered, overfishing and habitat degradation pose potential threats to their populations. Sustainable fishing practices and habitat conservation efforts are crucial for the continued survival of this species.
