Threatened Miscarriage

A threatened miscarriage refers to a condition that suggests a miscarriage might occur before the 20th week of pregnancy. It is characterized by certain symptoms, including vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, and back pain, though the cervix remains closed. Threatened miscarriage is a common complication of early pregnancy, affecting a significant number of pregnancies. Despite the alarming symptoms, it does not always result in the loss of the pregnancy.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The primary symptom of a threatened miscarriage is light to heavy vaginal bleeding. It is important to note that not all bleeding in early pregnancy results in miscarriage. Other symptoms may include abdominal pain, cramping, and lower back pain. The presence of these symptoms warrants immediate medical attention to assess the health of the pregnancy.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of a threatened miscarriage is primarily based on the patient's symptoms and a physical examination. An ultrasound may be performed to check the baby's heartbeat and movement. Additionally, the doctor may check the levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in the blood, as these levels can provide insight into the health of the pregnancy.

Management[edit | edit source]

Management of a threatened miscarriage primarily involves observation and rest. Patients are often advised to avoid physical exertion and sexual activity until the symptoms resolve. In some cases, the use of progesterone supplements may be recommended to support the pregnancy, although the effectiveness of this treatment is still under study.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

The prognosis for a threatened miscarriage varies. Many women who experience a threatened miscarriage go on to have healthy pregnancies and deliver healthy babies. However, the presence of symptoms such as heavy bleeding and severe cramping may indicate a higher risk of miscarriage.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

While not all cases of threatened miscarriage can be prevented, maintaining a healthy lifestyle before and during pregnancy can reduce the risk. This includes regular prenatal care, avoiding harmful substances like tobacco and alcohol, and managing chronic health conditions.
