Tipton County is a county located in the western part of the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 61,081. Its county seat is Covington. The county was founded on October 29, 1823, and named for Jacob Tipton, a soldier who died in 1791.

Tipton County was established in 1823 from parts of Shelby County. The county was named in honor of Jacob Tipton, who was killed by Native Americans in 1791. The county seat, Covington, was established in 1824 and has been the center of government and commerce for the county.
Geography[edit | edit source]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 474 square miles, of which 458 square miles is land and 16 square miles (3.4%) is water. The county is part of the Memphis metropolitan area.

Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of the 2020 census, there were 61,081 people, 21,000 households, and 15,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 133 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 75% White, 20% African American, 1% Native American, 1% Asian, and 3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5% of the population.
