Lauderdale County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 25,143. Its county seat and largest city is Ripley. The county was founded in 1835 and named for James Lauderdale, a soldier in the War of 1812.

Lauderdale County was established in 1835 from parts of Dyer, Haywood, and Tipton counties. The county is named after James Lauderdale, a soldier who died during the War of 1812.

Geography[edit | edit source]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 508 square miles (1,320 km²), of which 470 square miles (1,217 km²) is land and 38 square miles (98 km²) (7.5%) is water. The county is located in the western part of the state, along the Mississippi River.

As of the 2020 census, there were 25,143 people, 9,000 households, and 6,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 53 people per square mile (20/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 60% White, 37% Black or African American, and 3% from other races.

The economy of Lauderdale County is primarily based on agriculture, manufacturing, and services. Major crops include cotton, soybeans, and corn. The county is also home to several manufacturing facilities and small businesses.

Lauderdale County is served by the Lauderdale County School District, which operates several elementary, middle, and high schools in the area. The county is also home to the Tennessee College of Applied Technology - Ripley.
