Tofurky

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Tofurky is a brand of vegan and vegetarian food products. The name is a portmanteau of "tofu" and "turkey", and was first used for a meat substitute product created by Seth Tibbott in 1995. Tofurky products are made by Turtle Island Foods, a company based in Hood River, Oregon, United States.

History[edit | edit source]

Seth Tibbott founded Turtle Island Foods in 1980, initially producing tempeh, a traditional Indonesian soy product. In 1995, the company introduced the Tofurky roast, a vegetarian alternative to turkey, intended to be consumed as a main dish for Thanksgiving or other festive meals. The product was the first of its kind and gained popularity among vegetarians and vegans.

Products[edit | edit source]

Tofurky offers a range of vegan and vegetarian products, all made from a base of organic tofu and wheat protein. The product line includes roasts, deli slices, sausages, hot dogs, pizzas, and ground meat substitutes. All Tofurky products are certified vegan and are also Non-GMO Project verified.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Tofurky products have been well received by the vegetarian and vegan community. They are praised for their taste and texture, which many find similar to their meat counterparts. However, they have also been criticized by some for their high sodium content and processed nature.
