Tom Price (born October 8, 1954) is an American physician and politician who served as the 23rd United States Secretary of Health and Human Services from February to September 2017. A member of the Republican Party, he previously served as the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 6th congressional district from 2005 to 2017.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Price was born in Lansing, Michigan. He graduated from Dearborn High School in Dearborn, Michigan. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree and Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Michigan. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Medical career[edit | edit source]

After completing his residency, Price worked as an orthopedic surgeon for nearly 20 years. He was also an assistant professor at the Emory University School of Medicine and served as the medical director of the orthopedic clinic at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

Political career[edit | edit source]

Georgia State Senate[edit | edit source]

Price began his political career in the Georgia State Senate, where he served from 1997 to 2005. During his tenure, he was the Senate Majority Leader from 2002 to 2005.

U.S. House of Representatives[edit | edit source]

In 2004, Price was elected to the United States House of Representatives, representing Georgia's 6th congressional district. He was re-elected six times, serving from 2005 to 2017. During his time in Congress, Price was known for his conservative views on healthcare and fiscal policy. He was a member of the Republican Study Committee and served as the chairman of the House Budget Committee from 2015 to 2017.

Secretary of Health and Human Services[edit | edit source]

In November 2016, President-elect Donald Trump nominated Price to be the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on February 10, 2017. As Secretary, Price was a key figure in the administration's efforts to repeal and replace the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (commonly known as Obamacare). However, his tenure was marred by controversy over his use of private charter flights for official travel, leading to his resignation on September 29, 2017.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Price is married to Betty Clark Price, who is also a physician and a former member of the Georgia House of Representatives. They have one son.
