Tomaž Pisanski
Tomaž Pisanski is a Slovenian mathematician known for his contributions to the fields of graph theory and combinatorial chemistry. He was born on May 24, 1949, in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Pisanski is a professor at the University of Ljubljana and has held various academic positions throughout his career.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Tomaž Pisanski completed his undergraduate studies in mathematics at the University of Ljubljana. He later pursued his Ph.D. in graph theory under the supervision of Bojan Mohar.
Academic Career[edit | edit source]
Pisanski began his academic career as a researcher and lecturer at the University of Ljubljana. He has also held visiting positions at several prestigious institutions, including the University of Waterloo and the University of Zagreb. His research interests include graph theory, combinatorial chemistry, and discrete mathematics.
Contributions to Graph Theory[edit | edit source]
Pisanski is particularly known for his work on graph embeddings, graph polynomials, and chemical graph theory. He has published numerous papers in these areas and has collaborated with many prominent mathematicians.
Graph Embeddings[edit | edit source]
One of Pisanski's significant contributions is in the area of graph embeddings, where he has developed methods for embedding graphs on surfaces. His work has applications in topological graph theory and geometric graph theory.
Graph Polynomials[edit | edit source]
Pisanski has also made notable contributions to the study of graph polynomials, which are algebraic expressions that encode information about the structure of a graph. These polynomials have applications in chemistry, physics, and computer science.
Chemical Graph Theory[edit | edit source]
In the field of chemical graph theory, Pisanski has worked on the mathematical modeling of chemical compounds using graphs. This interdisciplinary field combines chemistry and mathematics to study the properties of molecules and their interactions.
Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]
Tomaž Pisanski has received several awards and honors for his contributions to mathematics, including the Zois Award for outstanding achievements in scientific research. He is also a member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Pisanski is married and has two children. In his free time, he enjoys hiking and reading.
