Tony the Tiger[edit | edit source]

Tony the Tiger is a famous advertising mascot for Kellogg's Frosted Flakes (also known as Frosties) breakfast cereal. He was first introduced in 1951 by the Leo Burnett advertising agency. Tony is known for his muscular build, blue nose, red bandana, and his catchphrase, "They're Gr-r-reat!"

Creation and Development[edit | edit source]

Leo Burnett, an American advertising company, created Tony the Tiger in 1951. The character was designed by a team of artists including Eugene Kolkey, Martin Provensen, and John Kellogg. Tony was initially one of several characters used to promote the cereal, but he quickly became the most popular and was chosen as the sole mascot.

Voice Actors[edit | edit source]

Over the years, Tony the Tiger has been voiced by several actors. The first was Thurl Ravenscroft, who provided Tony's voice from his creation in 1951 until his death in 2005. Ravenscroft's deep, resonant voice helped to make Tony's catchphrase, "They're Gr-r-reat!", one of the most recognizable in advertising. After Ravenscroft's death, voice actor Lee Marshall took over the role until his own death in 2014. Currently, the voice of Tony the Tiger is provided by Tex Brashear.

Cultural Impact[edit | edit source]

Tony the Tiger has had a significant cultural impact since his creation. He has become one of the most recognizable advertising mascots in the world and has been featured in numerous commercials, print ads, and promotional materials. Tony has also made appearances in other media, including video games and comic books.

Controversies[edit | edit source]

Despite his popularity, Tony the Tiger has not been without controversy. In the 1970s, a campaign by Action for Children's Television criticized the use of cartoon characters like Tony to promote sugary cereals to children. More recently, in 2016, Kellogg's faced backlash for a tweet featuring Tony that some felt was inappropriate.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Despite these controversies, Tony the Tiger remains a beloved figure in advertising. His catchphrase, "They're Gr-r-reat!", is instantly recognizable to many people, and his image continues to be used to promote Frosted Flakes cereal around the world.
