History[edit | edit source]
Tootsie Roll Industries was founded by Leo Hirshfield, an Austrian immigrant, in 1896. Hirshfield named the candy after his daughter, Clara, whose nickname was "Tootsie." In 1931, the company introduced the Tootsie Pop, a hard candy lollipop with a Tootsie Roll center. This product became another iconic item in the company's lineup. Over the years, Tootsie Roll Industries has acquired several other confectionery companies, including Charms Company, Cella's Confections, and Andes Candies.
