Torfhildur Þorsteinsdóttir was born in 1805 in the village of Hafnarfjörður, Iceland. She was the daughter of Þorsteinn Jónsson, a local farmer, and Sigridur Björnsdóttir. From a young age, Þorsteinsdóttir showed a talent for writing and storytelling, often entertaining her family and friends with her imaginative tales.

Þorsteinsdóttir's literary career began in her early twenties when she published her first collection of poems, "Whispers of the Wind."
