Torgiano DOC

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Torgiano DOC is a Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) wine designation for red and white wines produced in the Umbria region of Italy. The designation was granted in 1968, making it one of the first DOCs in Italy. The area is particularly known for its Sangiovese and Trebbiano wines.

History[edit | edit source]

The history of viticulture in Torgiano dates back to the Roman Empire, when the area was known for its quality wines. The modern Torgiano DOC was established in 1968, following the implementation of the DOC system in Italy in 1963. The creation of the DOC was largely due to the efforts of the Lungarotti family, who have been instrumental in promoting the wines of Torgiano and Umbria more generally.

Geography and Climate[edit | edit source]

Torgiano is located in the heart of Umbria, a region known for its rolling hills and fertile soils. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The vineyards are planted on south-facing slopes, which ensures optimal sun exposure.

Grape Varieties[edit | edit source]

The Torgiano DOC allows for the production of both red and white wines. The primary grape varieties used are Sangiovese and Trebbiano. Other permitted varieties include Grechetto, Canaiolo, and Ciliegiolo.

Wine Styles[edit | edit source]

Torgiano DOC wines can be made in a range of styles, from light and fresh to full-bodied and complex. The red wines are typically made from a blend of Sangiovese and Canaiolo, with smaller amounts of other varieties. They are known for their cherry and red fruit flavors, as well as their ability to age. The white wines, made primarily from Trebbiano and Grechetto, are light and crisp, with flavors of apple and pear.

Aging and Classification[edit | edit source]

Torgiano DOC wines must be aged for a minimum of one year before release. Wines labeled as Riserva must be aged for at least three years, including at least six months in bottle. In addition to the basic Torgiano DOC, there is also a Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG, which represents the highest quality wines from the area.
