Transform Drug Policy Foundation
Transform Drug Policy Foundation (TDPF) is a charitable organization based in the United Kingdom that advocates for the reform of drug policy. The organization was established in 1997 with the aim of reducing the harms associated with drugs and improving public health. TDPF believes that the current approach to drug policy, which is largely based on prohibition, is ineffective and counterproductive. Instead, it advocates for a regulated and controlled legal market for drugs.
History[edit | edit source]
TDPF was founded in 1997 by Danny Kushlick, who remains an active member of the organization. The foundation was established in response to the perceived failure of the War on Drugs, a global campaign of prohibition and military aid and intervention, with the aim of reducing the illegal drug trade. TDPF argues that this approach has not only failed to achieve its goals, but has also resulted in significant social and economic harm.
Advocacy[edit | edit source]
TDPF advocates for a shift in drug policy from prohibition to regulation. It argues that a regulated market would reduce the harms associated with drugs, including drug-related crime, health risks, and social inequality. The foundation also promotes harm reduction strategies, such as needle exchange programs and drug consumption rooms, as well as the decriminalization of drug possession for personal use.
TDPF's advocacy work includes research, public education, and policy development. The foundation has published a number of reports on drug policy, including "After the War on Drugs: Blueprint for Regulation", which outlines a detailed model for a regulated drug market.
Reception[edit | edit source]
TDPF's work has been recognized by a number of organizations and individuals. The foundation's reports have been cited by the Global Commission on Drug Policy and the British Medical Association. In addition, TDPF has been endorsed by several high-profile figures, including former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and former UK drug czar Mike Trace.
