Transmedicalism

Transmedicalism is a term used within the transgender community to describe the belief that being transgender is a medical condition, and that a diagnosis of gender dysphoria is necessary to be considered truly transgender. This view is controversial within the transgender community, and is opposed by those who believe that self-identification alone is sufficient to be considered transgender.

Definition

Transmedicalism, also known as truscum from "true transsexual scum", is a term used to describe a particular viewpoint within the transgender community. Transmedicalists believe that being transgender is a medical condition, and that a diagnosis of gender dysphoria is necessary to be considered truly transgender. This view is often contrasted with the belief that self-identification alone is sufficient to be considered transgender.

Controversy

The transmedicalist viewpoint is controversial within the transgender community. Critics argue that it gatekeeps transgender identity, excluding those who do not or cannot access medical transition. They also argue that it reinforces the medical model of disability, which views disability as an individual medical problem to be fixed, rather than a social issue related to societal barriers and discrimination.

History

The term "transmedicalism" was coined in the early 2010s by transgender activists who were critical of the increasing acceptance of non-binary and gender nonconforming identities within the transgender community. The term "truscum" was coined around the same time, and is often used pejoratively to describe transmedicalists.
