Transthoracic

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Transthoracic refers to a procedure or method that is performed or applied through the thorax or chest wall. It is a term commonly used in medical procedures such as transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE), transthoracic needle aspiration (TTNA), and transthoracic esophagectomy (TTE).

Transthoracic Echocardiogram[edit | edit source]

A transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure that uses ultrasound waves to create images of the heart. This procedure allows doctors to observe the functioning of the heart and its valves, helping in the diagnosis of various heart conditions such as heart disease, heart failure, and congenital heart defects.

Transthoracic Needle Aspiration[edit | edit source]

Transthoracic needle aspiration (TTNA) is a procedure used to obtain tissue or fluid samples from the lungs or the area around the lungs. This procedure is often used to diagnose lung diseases such as lung cancer, tuberculosis, and pneumonia. The procedure involves inserting a needle through the chest wall and into the lung tissue or fluid.

Transthoracic Esophagectomy[edit | edit source]

Transthoracic esophagectomy (TTE) is a surgical procedure performed to remove part or all of the esophagus. This procedure is often used to treat esophageal cancer. During a TTE, the surgeon makes an incision in the chest wall to access the esophagus.
