Transurethral needle ablation

Transurethral needle ablation (TUNA) is a medical procedure used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition characterized by the enlargement of the prostate gland. The procedure involves the use of low-level radiofrequency energy to ablate prostate tissue.

Procedure[edit | edit source]

TUNA is performed by inserting a special catheter into the urethra through the penis. The catheter has two needles that can be extended into the prostate tissue. These needles deliver low-level radiofrequency energy that heats and destroys the enlarged prostate tissue that is causing symptoms. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia and takes about 30 minutes.

Benefits[edit | edit source]

TUNA is a minimally invasive procedure that can be performed in an outpatient setting. It provides a treatment option for men who cannot undergo more invasive procedures due to medical reasons. The procedure has been shown to improve urinary symptoms and flow rates in men with BPH.

Risks[edit | edit source]

As with any medical procedure, TUNA carries some risks. These may include urinary tract infection, blood in the urine, urinary retention, and sexual dysfunction. However, these risks are generally lower than those associated with more invasive procedures for BPH.
