Treponema pallidum

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

(Redirected from Treponema infection)

Treponema pallidum is a species of spirochaete bacteria with subspecies that cause treponemal diseases such as syphilis, bejel, and yaws. The treponema pallidum bacterium has a helical shape and is highly mobile due to its unique structure, which includes a cytoplasmic and outer membrane, periplasmic space, and a peptidoglycan layer.

Classification[edit | edit source]

Treponema pallidum is part of the larger Treponema genus, which is a group of gram-negative bacteria that includes several pathogenic and non-pathogenic species. The species is further divided into several subspecies, including Treponema pallidum pallidum, Treponema pallidum pertenue, Treponema pallidum endemicum, and Treponema pallidum carateum.

Pathogenesis[edit | edit source]

The pathogenesis of Treponema pallidum is largely due to its ability to evade the host's immune response. The bacterium can penetrate intact mucous membranes or damaged skin, and disseminate through the bloodstream and lymphatic system. The lack of surface proteins on the outer membrane of the bacterium makes it difficult for the immune system to detect and destroy it.

Diseases[edit | edit source]

The different subspecies of Treponema pallidum cause different diseases. Treponema pallidum pallidum is responsible for syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection that can cause long-term complications if not treated. Treponema pallidum pertenue causes yaws, a tropical infection of the skin, bones and joints. Treponema pallidum endemicum is responsible for bejel, also known as endemic syphilis. Treponema pallidum carateum causes pinta, a skin disease found in Central and South America.

Diagnosis and Treatment[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of diseases caused by Treponema pallidum typically involves serological tests, as the bacterium cannot be cultured in the laboratory. Treatment usually involves antibiotics, with penicillin being the drug of choice.
