From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia
Brodmann area 45

Brodmann area 45 (BA45) is a region in the brain's frontal lobe that is part of the prefrontal cortex. It is also known as the pars triangularis due to its triangular shape. This area is involved in various cognitive functions, including language processing, executive functions, and social cognition.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

Brodmann area 45 is located in the inferior frontal gyrus of the frontal lobe. It is bordered by Brodmann area 44 (BA44) posteriorly, Brodmann area 46 (BA46) dorsally, and the lateral sulcus ventrally. The area is part of the Brodmann areas, which are regions of the cerebral cortex defined based on their cytoarchitectonic characteristics.

Function[edit | edit source]

BA45 plays a crucial role in language processing and is a part of the Broca's area, which is essential for speech production and language comprehension. It is also involved in various executive functions, such as decision-making, problem-solving, and planning. Additionally, BA45 contributes to social cognition, including understanding others' intentions and emotions.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Damage to Brodmann area 45 can result in language deficits, such as Broca's aphasia, characterized by difficulties in speech production and fluency. Lesions in this area may also affect executive functions and social behavior, leading to challenges in decision-making and social interactions.
