Tung Oil

Tung oil, also known as China wood oil, is a drying oil obtained by pressing the seed from the nut of the tung tree (Vernicia fordii). As a drying oil, tung oil hardens upon exposure to air. The resulting coating is transparent and plastic-like, a property exploited in most of its applications which include wood finishing and the production of oilcloth and certain types of ink and paint.

History[edit | edit source]

Tung oil has been used for centuries in China, where it was used as a preservative for wood ships. The oil is derived from the seeds of the tung tree, which is native to China and a few other Asian countries. The tree was introduced to the west in the late 19th century, primarily in the United States and Argentina.

Production[edit | edit source]

The production of tung oil involves the pressing of the seeds from the tung tree. The raw oil is then refined through a process of heating and filtering, which removes impurities and produces a more durable product. The oil can be further processed to produce a variety of products, including varnishes, paints, and inks.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Tung oil is used in a variety of applications. Its primary use is in the finishing of wood, where it provides a protective, waterproof coating. It is also used in the production of oilcloth, a type of waterproof cloth. In addition, tung oil is used in certain types of ink and paint, where it provides a smooth, glossy finish.

Properties[edit | edit source]

Tung oil is known for its ability to dry quickly, forming a hard, durable coating. It is resistant to water, alcohol, and mild acids and bases, making it suitable for use in a variety of environments. Tung oil also has a high refractive index, which means it bends light more than many other oils, giving finished products a glossy appearance.

Health and Safety[edit | edit source]

While tung oil is generally safe to use, it can cause allergic reactions in some people. It is also toxic if ingested, and can cause respiratory problems if inhaled in large amounts. Therefore, it is important to use tung oil in a well-ventilated area and to wear protective clothing when handling it.
