Thomas Tunnock founded the company in 1890 after paying £80 for a baker's shop in Uddingston. The business initially started as a small bakery, selling quality bakery products. It was not until 1952 that the company introduced the now-iconic Caramel Wafer, which propelled Tunnock's to national and then international fame.
