UFSP1
UFSP1 (Ufm1-specific protease 1) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the UFSP1 gene. This protein is part of the ubiquitin-like modifier system, specifically the Ufm1 (ubiquitin-fold modifier 1) system, which is involved in various cellular processes such as protein degradation, cell cycle control, and cellular differentiation.
Function[edit | edit source]
The UFSP1 protein is a cysteine protease that is responsible for the removal of Ufm1 from its conjugated target proteins. This process, known as deubiquitination, is crucial for the regulation of the Ufm1 system. The UFSP1 protein is also involved in the processing of the Ufm1 precursor protein to its mature form.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Mutations in the UFSP1 gene have been associated with various diseases. For example, a study published in 2019 found that a mutation in this gene was associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. Another study published in 2020 found that a mutation in the UFSP1 gene was associated with cancer, specifically breast cancer.
