From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Uber Eats is an American online food ordering and delivery platform launched by Uber in 2014 and based in San Francisco, California.

History[edit | edit source]

Uber Eats was first launched in August 2014 under the name UberFRESH, offering meals from select restaurants in Santa Monica, California. In 2015, the platform was renamed to Uber Eats, and the ordering software was separated from the app for Uber rides.

Service[edit | edit source]

Users can read menus, order, and pay for food from participating restaurants using an application on the iOS or Android platforms, or through a web browser. Users additionally have the option to tip for delivery. Payment is charged to a card on file with Uber. Meals are delivered by couriers using cars, bikes, or on foot.

Expansion[edit | edit source]

As of 2021, Uber Eats is available in over 6,000 cities, in 45 countries, on six continents. The service's main competitors include Grubhub, DoorDash, Postmates, and Just Eat.

Criticism[edit | edit source]

Uber Eats has been criticized for excessive delivery fees and for paying low wages to its drivers. The company has also faced lawsuits from several cities and countries over various disputes.
