Unicoi County, Tennessee

Unicoi County, Tennessee is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 17,928. The county seat is Erwin. Unicoi County is part of the Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area, commonly known as the Tri-Cities region.

Unicoi County was established in 1875 from portions of Washington and Carter counties. The name "Unicoi" is derived from the Cherokee language, meaning "white" or "fog draped."

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 186 square miles (480 km²), of which 186 square miles (480 km²) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km²) (0.05%) is water. The county is located entirely within the Blue Ridge Mountains, a segment of the larger Appalachian Mountains.

As of the 2020 census, there were 17,928 people, 7,558 households, and 5,123 families residing in the county. The population density was 96 people per square mile (37/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 96.5% White, 0.8% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, and 2.0% from two or more races. 1.2% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The economy of Unicoi County is diverse, with significant contributions from manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism. The county is known for its outdoor recreational opportunities, including hiking, fishing, and camping in the Cherokee National Forest.

Unicoi County is served by the Unicoi County Schools system, which includes several elementary schools, a middle school, and Unicoi County High School.
