The University of Guyana is the national higher education institution in Guyana. Established in 1963, it is located in the capital city of Georgetown. The university offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across various fields of study.

The University of Guyana was founded on April 25, 1963, by the government of Guyana under the leadership of then Prime Minister Cheddi Jagan. The institution was established to provide higher education opportunities to the citizens of Guyana and to support the country's development needs. Initially, the university offered evening classes to accommodate working students.

The main campus of the University of Guyana is situated at Turkeyen, on the outskirts of Georgetown. The university also has a second campus located in Berbice, which was established to expand access to higher education in the region.
