University of Northern British Columbia
University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC)
The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) is a small, research-intensive university located in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada. Established in 1990, UNBC is one of Canada's youngest universities, but it has quickly gained a reputation for its strong focus on research, sustainability, and Indigenous studies. The university's main campus is situated in Prince George, with regional campuses in Quesnel, Terrace, and Fort St. John, serving the northern and interior regions of British Columbia.
History[edit | edit source]
UNBC was officially established on June 22, 1990, following a large grassroots campaign across northern British Columbia that called for a new university to serve the needs of the region. The university welcomed its first cohort of students in 1994. Since its inception, UNBC has been committed to serving the northern community, focusing on issues relevant to the region, including forestry, environmental science, and rural health.
Academics[edit | edit source]
UNBC offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. The university is organized into several faculties, including the Faculty of Science and Management, the Faculty of Health Sciences, and the College of Arts, Social and Health Sciences. UNBC is particularly noted for its programs in Environmental Science, Forestry, Nursing, and Indigenous Studies.
Medical Education[edit | edit source]
One of the significant milestones in UNBC's history was the establishment of the Northern Medical Program (NMP) in 2004, in partnership with the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Medicine. The NMP aims to address the shortage of physicians in northern British Columbia and focuses on a curriculum that includes rural and Indigenous health care. The program is part of UBC's distributed medical education model, which allows students to complete their medical education in various parts of the province.
Campus[edit | edit source]
The main campus in Prince George is known for its striking architecture and its integration with the surrounding forested landscape. The campus features state-of-the-art facilities, including the Geoffrey R. Weller Library, the Northern Sport Centre, and the I.K. Barber Enhanced Forestry Laboratory. Sustainability is a core principle at UNBC, and the university has been recognized for its efforts in green building practices and energy efficiency.
Research[edit | edit source]
Research at UNBC is focused on issues of importance to northern and rural communities. The university has established several research institutes and centres, including the Natural Resources and Environmental Studies Institute and the Health Research Institute. UNBC researchers are engaged in a wide range of projects, from climate change and ecosystem management to rural and Indigenous health.
Student Life[edit | edit source]
Student life at UNBC is vibrant, with numerous clubs, organizations, and events. The university's location offers unique opportunities for outdoor activities, including hiking, skiing, and kayaking. The UNBC Student Union plays an active role in campus life, advocating for student interests and providing various services.
Conclusion[edit | edit source]
The University of Northern British Columbia stands as a testament to the power of community advocacy and the importance of providing higher education opportunities in rural and northern regions. Through its commitment to research, sustainability, and addressing the needs of its community, UNBC continues to make a significant impact in British Columbia and beyond.
