The University of Queensland (UQ) is a public research university located primarily in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Founded in 1909 by the Queensland parliament, UQ is one of the six sandstone universities, an informal designation of the oldest university in each state. The university's main campus is situated in the suburb of St Lucia, southwest of the Brisbane central business district.

The University of Queensland was established by an act of the Queensland parliament on 10 December 1909 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Queensland's separation from the colony of New South Wales. The first classes were held in 1911 in Old Government House in George Street, Brisbane.

Early Years[edit | edit source]

The university's first chancellor was Sir William MacGregor, and its first vice-chancellor was Reginald Heber Roe. The university started with three faculties: Arts, Science, and Engineering. In 1927, the university moved to its current site in St Lucia.

Expansion and Development[edit | edit source]

During the 1940s and 1950s, the university expanded significantly, with the construction of the Forgan Smith Building, which became the main administrative building. The post-war period saw a rapid increase in student numbers and the establishment of new faculties and schools.

Campuses[edit | edit source]

UQ has three main campuses: St Lucia, Gatton, and Herston. The St Lucia campus is the largest and most comprehensive, offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

St Lucia Campus[edit | edit source]

The St Lucia campus is renowned for its beautiful sandstone buildings and the Great Court, a heritage-listed site. It is home to the UQ Art Museum, the Duhig Library, and the UQ Lakes.

Gatton Campus[edit | edit source]

Located in the Lockyer Valley, the Gatton campus focuses on agriculture, animals, veterinary science, and the environment.

Herston Campus[edit | edit source]

The Herston campus is the university's core campus for clinical health teaching and research.

UQ is a member of the Group of Eight, a coalition of leading Australian universities. It offers a wide range of programs across various disciplines, including humanities, business, law, science, engineering, and medicine.
