Valréas was historically part of the Papal States, specifically the Comtat Venaissin, from 1317 until the French Revolution in 1791. This unique historical status has earned it the nickname "Enclave des Papes" (Enclave of the Popes).

Valréas is located in the northern part of Vaucluse, close to the borders of the Drôme department. It is surrounded by the communes of Grillon, Visan, and Richerenches. The town is situated in the heart of the Côtes du Rhône wine-growing region, contributing significantly to the local economy.
