Veena
Veena is a plucked string instrument used primarily in Carnatic music, the classical music of Southern India. It is named after the Hindu goddess Saraswati, who is often depicted holding or playing the instrument. The veena is one of the oldest instruments in Indian classical music, with references to it dating back to ancient Vedic texts.
History[edit | edit source]
The veena has a rich history that spans over two thousand years. It is mentioned in the Rigveda, one of the oldest texts in any Indo-European language, and is also depicted in ancient Buddhist art. The veena evolved over centuries into its current form, which is characterized by a large resonator, a long hollow neck, and a smaller resonator at the top.
Construction[edit | edit source]
The veena is traditionally made from jackwood, a tropical hardwood. The large resonator, known as the kudam, is hollow and is covered with a layer of calfskin or goatskin. The neck is hollow and contains 24 frets, which are made from brass or silver. The smaller resonator, known as the yali, is used to tune the instrument.
Playing technique[edit | edit source]
The veena is played by plucking the strings with the fingers of the right hand, while the left hand is used to manipulate the frets. The instrument is capable of producing a wide range of sounds, from deep, resonant bass notes to high, piercing trebles. The veena is often used to accompany vocal performances, but it can also be played solo.
Types of veena[edit | edit source]
There are several types of veena, each with its own unique characteristics. These include the Saraswati veena, the Rudra veena, the Vichitra veena, and the Mohan veena. The Saraswati veena is the most common type and is often simply referred to as the "veena".
In popular culture[edit | edit source]
The veena is a popular instrument in Indian cinema and is often used in the background score of films. It is also featured in the logo of the All India Radio, the national public radio broadcaster of India.
