Verumontanum

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Verumontanum is a small, tubular structure located in the urethra of the male human body. It is also known as the seminal colliculus, and is a landmark in the prostate gland. The verumontanum contains the openings of the ejaculatory ducts and the prostatic utricle.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The verumontanum is located in the posterior wall of the prostatic urethra. It is a longitudinal elevation and is about 1 cm in length. The verumontanum is the location of the openings of the ejaculatory ducts and the prostatic utricle. The ejaculatory ducts carry sperm and seminal fluid from the seminal vesicles and vas deferens to the urethra. The prostatic utricle, which is a small, blind pouch, opens into the verumontanum.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

The verumontanum is a significant landmark in the diagnosis and treatment of several urological conditions. It is used as a reference point in transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), a surgical procedure used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The verumontanum is also used as a landmark in the placement of urethral catheters.

In some cases, the verumontanum may be enlarged or inflamed, which can cause symptoms such as dysuria (painful urination), hematuria (blood in the urine), and urinary retention. These symptoms may indicate a condition such as prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate gland) or prostate cancer.
