Victor Vaughen Morris
Victor Vaughen Morris[edit | edit source]
Victor Vaughen Morris was an American bartender and entrepreneur who is credited with inventing the Pisco Sour, a popular cocktail in both Peru and Chile. He was born in 1873 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and later moved to Lima, Peru, where he opened Morris' Bar in 1916.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Morris was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1873. He was the son of a prominent local businessman. After completing his education, he worked in various jobs before deciding to move to Peru in the early 1900s.
Move to Peru[edit | edit source]
In 1903, Morris moved to Lima, Peru, where he initially worked for the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. He later opened his own bar, Morris' Bar, in 1916. The bar quickly became popular among both locals and expatriates.
Invention of the Pisco Sour[edit | edit source]
Morris is best known for inventing the Pisco Sour, a cocktail that combines pisco (a type of brandy produced in Peru and Chile), lime juice, syrup, egg white, and Angostura bitters. The cocktail was first created in the early 1920s and quickly became a favorite among the patrons of Morris' Bar.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Morris passed away in 1929, but his legacy lives on through the Pisco Sour. The cocktail is now considered a national drink in both Peru and Chile, and both countries celebrate National Pisco Sour Day annually. Morris' Bar, although no longer in operation, is remembered as the birthplace of this iconic cocktail.
