Since then, the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) and the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) have taken over the responsibility of maintaining the directory.

The last edition of the WHO Directory of Medical Schools was published in 2000. Since then, the responsibility of maintaining the directory has been taken over by the WFME and FAIMER. These organizations have created the World Directory of Medical Schools, which is an online resource that continues the work of the WHO Directory.
