watchOS is the operating system developed by Apple Inc. for the Apple Watch line of smartwatches. It is based on iOS, the operating system used by the iPhone and iPad, and shares many of its features and technologies.

watchOS was first introduced in April 2015 alongside the first Apple Watch. Since its initial release, Apple has updated watchOS annually, adding new features and improving performance.

watchOS 1[edit | edit source]

The first version of watchOS was released in April 2015. It included basic functionality such as notifications, fitness tracking, and Siri integration.

watchOS 2[edit | edit source]

Released in September 2015, watchOS 2 introduced native apps, allowing developers to create apps that run directly on the Apple Watch. It also added new watch faces and Time Travel, a feature that lets users scroll through upcoming events and weather forecasts.

watchOS 3[edit | edit source]

In September 2016, watchOS 3 focused on performance improvements and a redesigned user interface. It introduced the Dock, a new way to access frequently used apps, and the Breathe app for guided breathing exercises.

watchOS 6, released in September 2019, introduced the App Store directly on the Apple Watch, allowing users to download apps without needing an iPhone. It also added new health features, such as Cycle Tracking and the Noise app.

In September 2020, watchOS 7 introduced sleep tracking, new watch faces, and the ability to share watch faces with others. It also added a handwashing timer to encourage proper hygiene.

Released in September 2021, watchOS 8 focused on health and wellness, adding new workout types and enhancements to the Mindfulness app. It also improved the Photos app and introduced new messaging features.

watchOS 9, released in September 2022, brought new features such as AFib History and Medication Tracking. It also introduced new watch faces and improved the Workout app with advanced metrics.
