- Wayland was first settled by European Americans in 1830, and it was officially incorporated as a city in 1960. The city was named after a town in Massachusetts by the same name.

- Wayland is located in the southwestern part of Michigan. It is approximately 18 miles south of Grand Rapids and 50 miles north of Kalamazoo. The city covers a total area of 3.03 square miles, of which 2.93 square miles is land and 0.10 square miles is water.
