Westel Willoughby Jr.
Westel Willoughby Jr. (April 20, 1769 – October 3, 1844) was an American physician and politician. He was a prominent figure in the early 19th century, known for his contributions to medicine and his role in the political landscape of New York State.

Westel Willoughby Jr. was born on April 20, 1769, in Goshen, Connecticut. He pursued his early education in local schools and later studied medicine under the guidance of Dr. Joshua Porter in Salisbury, Connecticut. Willoughby completed his medical training and began practicing medicine in Herkimer County, New York.

Willoughby was a pioneering physician in New York State. He was instrumental in the establishment of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of the Western District of New York, which later became part of the State University of New York Upstate Medical University. His efforts significantly contributed to the advancement of medical education and practice in the region.

In addition to his medical career, Willoughby was actively involved in politics. He served as a member of the New York State Assembly from 1808 to 1810. He was also a member of the New York State Senate from 1811 to 1815. During his tenure, he was known for advocating for public health measures and improvements in medical education.

Willoughby married Hannah Willoughby and had several children. He was a respected member of his community and was involved in various civic activities. He passed away on October 3, 1844, in Newport, New York.
