William Bradley (giant)
William Bradley (February 10, 1787 – May 30, 1820) was an Englishman famed for his extraordinary height. Known as the "Yorkshire Giant," Bradley stood at a remarkable 7 feet 9 inches (236 cm) tall. His size was a result of gigantism, a condition caused by an overproduction of growth hormone. Bradley's life and stature made him a notable figure in the early 19th century, both in Britain and beyond.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
William Bradley was born in Market Weighton, Yorkshire, to a family of average-sized parents and siblings. His extraordinary growth began in childhood and continued into his adult years. Despite his size, Bradley was known to be gentle and good-natured. His early life on the family farm involved typical agricultural work, but as he grew older, his size made such tasks increasingly difficult.
Public Life[edit | edit source]
As news of his stature spread, Bradley became a public figure, drawing crowds wherever he went. He was often invited to fairs and public gatherings, where he would be exhibited for a fee. Despite the challenges his size presented, Bradley capitalized on his unique condition to make a living, a common practice for individuals with unusual physical traits during this period.
In 1782, Bradley was officially measured by the Royal Society in London, confirming his height at 7 feet 9 inches. This measurement made him the tallest man in Britain at the time and possibly the tallest in the world.
Later Life and Death[edit | edit source]
In his later years, Bradley's health began to decline, a common consequence of gigantism. The condition often leads to various complications, including cardiovascular issues and joint pain. William Bradley died in 1820 at the age of 33. His grave, located in Market Weighton, remains a site of interest, marked by a large stone slab that commemorates his extraordinary life.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
William Bradley's life story has been the subject of various books and articles, contributing to the folklore of Yorkshire. His existence is a testament to the human body's capacity for extraordinary growth and the challenges that come with such anomalies. Bradley is remembered not only for his size but also for his gentle demeanor and the dignity with which he navigated the challenges posed by his condition.
