William F. Tate IV
William F. Tate IV is an American academic and administrator who currently serves as the President of Louisiana State University (LSU). He is the first African American to hold this position in the university's history.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
William F. Tate IV was born in Illinois. He completed his undergraduate studies at Northern Illinois University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. He then pursued a Master of Arts in Mathematics at the University of Texas at Dallas. Tate furthered his education by obtaining a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from the University of Maryland, College Park. Additionally, he holds a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Chicago.
Academic Career[edit | edit source]
Tate began his academic career as a faculty member at Texas Christian University. He later joined the faculty at University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he served in various capacities, including as a professor and department chair. Tate's research interests include mathematics education, educational policy, and the role of race and socioeconomic status in educational outcomes.

Before his appointment at LSU, Tate held several significant administrative roles. He served as the Dean of the Graduate School and Vice Provost for Graduate Education at Washington University in St. Louis. He was also the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at the University of South Carolina.

In 2021, William F. Tate IV was appointed as the President of Louisiana State University. His appointment marked a historic moment as he became the first African American to lead the institution.
