William Ruschenberger
William Samuel Waithman Ruschenberger (September 4, 1807 – March 24, 1895) was a United States Navy surgeon and naturalist. He is known for his contributions to medicine and natural history during the 19th century.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Ruschenberger was born in Cumberland County, New Jersey. He pursued his early education in Philadelphia, where he developed an interest in medicine and natural sciences. He later attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his medical degree in 1830.

After completing his medical education, Ruschenberger joined the United States Navy as an assistant surgeon. He served on various naval vessels, including the USS Peacock and the USS Potomac. His naval career took him to many parts of the world, including South America, Asia, and the Pacific Islands.

Ruschenberger made significant contributions to the fields of medicine and natural history. He published several works on his observations and experiences during his naval service. His notable publications include:
