- Winchester is located at an elevation of 1,575 feet (480 m) above sea level, in the fertile valley of the San Jacinto River. The area is characterized by rolling hills and a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.

- Winchester was founded in 1886 in Pleasant Valley in what was then San Diego County. The town was named after the widow of Horace Winchester, Mrs. Amy Winchester.
