Women on Waves
Women on Waves is a non-profit organization founded in 1999 by Dutch physician Rebecca Gomperts. Its primary mission is to prevent unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions worldwide. The organization is known for its innovative approach to providing abortion services, particularly in countries where such services are illegal or heavily restricted. Women on Waves operates by using a specially designed ship to carry out abortions in international waters, where the laws of the country of origin do not apply.
History[edit | edit source]
Women on Waves was established after Rebecca Gomperts witnessed the dire consequences of illegal abortions during her time working as a doctor in countries where abortion is heavily restricted. The organization's first campaign took place in 2001, when its ship sailed to Ireland, a country with strict abortion laws at the time. Since then, Women on Waves has launched several campaigns in countries around the world, including Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Morocco, among others.
Method of Operation[edit | edit source]
The Women on Waves ship is equipped with a clinic where medical abortions can be performed safely by qualified medical personnel. The ship sails to a port in the target country and then moves into international waters, usually 12 nautical miles from the coast, to provide abortions. The organization uses mifepristone and misoprostol, drugs approved by the World Health Organization for medical abortion, to terminate pregnancies up to nine weeks.
In addition to providing abortion services, Women on Waves also offers sexual health education, contraception, and workshops on women's rights and health. The organization aims to raise awareness about the importance of safe abortion access and to challenge restrictive abortion laws.
Controversies and Legal Challenges[edit | edit source]
Women on Waves has faced significant opposition and legal challenges from governments and anti-abortion groups. The arrival of its ship often sparks public debate and protests. Some countries have attempted to block the ship from entering their ports, citing legal and moral objections. Despite these challenges, Women on Waves continues to advocate for reproductive rights and access to safe abortions.
Impact[edit | edit source]
Women on Waves has had a significant impact on the global conversation about abortion rights and access to safe reproductive health services. The organization's campaigns have brought international attention to the consequences of restrictive abortion laws and have provided direct assistance to women in need. Women on Waves also works to support local women's groups and to promote legal reform.
