World Hepatitis Alliance[edit | edit source]

The World Hepatitis Alliance (WHA) is a global non-governmental organization dedicated to the elimination of viral hepatitis as a public health threat. It was established to provide a voice for the 325 million people worldwide living with chronic hepatitis B and C.

History[edit | edit source]

The World Hepatitis Alliance was founded in 2007 by patient groups from around the world. The organization was created in response to the lack of awareness and action on viral hepatitis, which affects millions of people globally. Since its inception, the WHA has worked to raise awareness, influence policy, and support patients and communities affected by hepatitis.

Mission and Objectives[edit | edit source]

The mission of the World Hepatitis Alliance is to harness the power of people living with viral hepatitis to achieve its elimination by 2030. The WHA aims to:

  • Raise awareness of viral hepatitis and its impact on global health.
  • Advocate for increased funding and resources for hepatitis prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • Support the development and implementation of national hepatitis strategies.
  • Empower patient groups and individuals affected by hepatitis to take action.

Key Initiatives[edit | edit source]

World Hepatitis Day[edit | edit source]

One of the WHA's most significant initiatives is World Hepatitis Day, observed annually on July 28. This day is dedicated to raising global awareness of hepatitis and encouraging prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The WHA coordinates activities and campaigns worldwide to mark this day.

NOhep Movement[edit | edit source]

The WHA launched the NOhep movement, a global campaign to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030. NOhep aims to unite people from all sectors to take action and drive progress towards the elimination of hepatitis.

Find the Missing Millions[edit | edit source]

The "Find the Missing Millions" campaign is another key initiative by the WHA. It focuses on increasing diagnosis rates by addressing barriers to testing and ensuring that those living with hepatitis are aware of their status and can access treatment.

Governance[edit | edit source]

The World Hepatitis Alliance is governed by a board of directors composed of representatives from its member organizations. The board provides strategic direction and oversight to ensure the WHA achieves its mission and objectives.

Membership[edit | edit source]

The WHA is a membership organization, with members consisting of patient groups, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders committed to the elimination of viral hepatitis. Members benefit from access to resources, support, and a global network of advocates.

Impact[edit | edit source]

The World Hepatitis Alliance has played a crucial role in elevating the profile of viral hepatitis on the global health agenda. Through its advocacy efforts, the WHA has contributed to the inclusion of hepatitis in the World Health Organization's Global Health Sector Strategy and the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals target to eliminate hepatitis by 2030.
