Yazdi cake

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Yazdi Cake is a traditional Iranian pastry. Named after the city of Yazd, it is a popular dessert in Iran and among the Iranian diaspora.

History[edit | edit source]

The Yazdi cake has its roots in the ancient city of Yazd, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its historic architecture and rich culinary tradition. The cake is believed to have been created during the Safavid dynasty, a significant period in Iran's history when many of its most famous dishes were developed.

Ingredients and Preparation[edit | edit source]

Yazdi cakes are made from a mixture of flour, sugar, eggs, yogurt, vegetable oil, and baking powder. They are flavored with cardamom and rose water, two ingredients commonly used in Iranian desserts. The batter is poured into small, dome-shaped molds and baked until golden brown. The cakes are often topped with poppy seeds or sesame seeds before baking.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

Yazdi cakes are often served at Nowruz, the Iranian New Year, and other celebrations. They are also a common feature in Iranian bakeries and tea houses. The cakes are known for their moist, dense texture and aromatic flavor, which is both sweet and slightly spicy due to the use of cardamom.
