Yvonne Thornton
Yvonne Thornton is an American obstetrician and gynecologist, and a specialist in maternal-fetal medicine. She is also a best-selling author, known for her memoir The Ditchdigger's Daughters.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Yvonne Thornton was born in New York City to Itasker and Donald Thornton. Her father, a ditchdigger, inspired her and her five sisters to pursue education and professional careers. This story is detailed in her memoir, The Ditchdigger's Daughters.
Thornton graduated from Monmouth University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She then attended the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where she earned her Doctor of Medicine degree. She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Harlem Hospital Center, and a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center.
Career[edit | edit source]
Thornton has had a distinguished career in medicine, specializing in high-risk pregnancies. She was the first African-American woman in the United States to become board-certified in maternal-fetal medicine. She has also served as a professor at several prestigious institutions, including Columbia University and Weill Cornell Medicine.
In addition to her medical career, Thornton is a successful author. Her memoir, The Ditchdigger's Daughters, was a best-seller and was adapted into a television movie. The book tells the story of her upbringing and the values instilled in her by her parents.

Thornton is married to Dr. Shearwood McClelland, a neurosurgeon. They have two children together.
Awards and recognition[edit | edit source]
Thornton has received numerous awards and honors for her work in medicine and literature. These include the American Medical Women's Association's Woman in Science Award and the National Medical Association's Scroll of Merit.
