Zibelemärit (Bernese German for Onion Market) is a traditional folk festival held on the fourth Monday of November in the Old City of Bern, the capital of Switzerland. This event, deeply rooted in Bernese culture, attracts visitors from all over Switzerland and beyond, turning the city's streets into a vibrant marketplace dedicated to onions and garlic.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of Zibelemärit are not entirely clear, but it is believed to have started in the 15th century. Initially, it was a market day granted to the farmers from the surrounding areas, allowing them to sell their produce before the onset of winter. Over the centuries, it evolved into a festival specifically focused on onions and garlic, with farmers from the canton of Fribourg bringing braided onions (Zwiebelzöpfe) and other related products to sell.

The Festival[edit | edit source]

The Zibelemärit begins early in the morning and lasts throughout the day. The main attraction is the market, where over 50 tons of onions and garlic, beautifully arranged in braids and bouquets, are sold. These products are not only culinary ingredients but also serve as decorative items, with their intricate braids and vibrant colors.

In addition to the onion market, the festival features a variety of food stalls, selling traditional Swiss dishes such as raclette, fondue, and Zwiebelkuchen (onion pie). There is also a fairground with rides and games for children, making it a family-friendly event.

One of the unique traditions of Zibelemärit is the confetti war, where participants, especially children, throw confetti at each other. This playful aspect of the festival adds to its lively atmosphere.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

Zibelemärit is not just a market; it is a significant cultural event that showcases the agricultural heritage and culinary traditions of Bern and Switzerland. It fosters a sense of community and continuity, connecting the present with the past. The festival also highlights the importance of onions in Swiss cuisine and their role in winter preparations.

Impact on Bern[edit | edit source]

The Zibelemärit has a substantial impact on the city of Bern, drawing thousands of visitors and boosting local businesses. It is a day when the city's usual pace slows down, allowing residents and visitors alike to enjoy the festivities, the food, and the company of each other in the historic setting of the Old City.
