Zoidberg
Zoidberg is a fictional character from the animated television series Futurama, which was created by Matt Groening and developed by David X. Cohen. The character is voiced by Billy West.
Character Overview[edit | edit source]
Dr. John A. Zoidberg, commonly referred to as Zoidberg, is a Decapodian, a crustacean-like alien species. He serves as the staff doctor for the interplanetary delivery company Planet Express, which is owned by Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth. Despite his title, Zoidberg is notoriously incompetent in his medical duties, often displaying a lack of understanding of human anatomy and physiology.
Appearance and Personality[edit | edit source]
Zoidberg is characterized by his lobster-like appearance, complete with a hard exoskeleton, claws, and a face tentacle. He is often depicted as being poor, hungry, and socially inept, which makes him the subject of ridicule among his colleagues. Despite his shortcomings, Zoidberg is generally good-natured and well-meaning.
Background[edit | edit source]
Zoidberg was born on the planet Decapod 10, which is inhabited by his species. He attended medical school, although the specifics of his education are often called into question due to his lack of medical knowledge. Zoidberg's backstory includes a long-standing rivalry with his uncle, Harold Zoid, who is a famous silent hologram star.
Role in Futurama[edit | edit source]
Throughout the series, Zoidberg's role is primarily that of comic relief. His incompetence and bizarre behavior often lead to humorous situations. Despite his many flaws, Zoidberg occasionally shows moments of insight and compassion, endearing him to the audience.
Relationships[edit | edit source]
Zoidberg has a complex relationship with his colleagues at Planet Express. He is often mistreated by Bender Bending Rodríguez and Turanga Leela, but he maintains a friendship with Philip J. Fry, who is more tolerant of his quirks. Zoidberg also has a strained relationship with Hermes Conrad, the company's bureaucrat, who frequently expresses disdain for him.
Cultural Impact[edit | edit source]
Zoidberg has become a popular character among Futurama fans, known for his distinctive voice and catchphrases such as "Why not Zoidberg?" His character has been referenced in various forms of media and has inspired a range of merchandise.
